Think Like a Startup - Alexis Ohanian, Founder of, Investor, Entrepreneur

America is losing its competitive edge as a nation. With fewer products being produced in the US, it is innovation coming from dorm-rooms and garages that will continue generating wealth (and jobs) for the next generation. Today, Google (started in a garage) has over 20,000 employees. Skype was developed by programmers in Estonia, and when it was sold, the price was equal to more than 1/10th of Estonia's GDP that year. A 17-year-old high school student in Moscow started, which quickly became one of the most popular websites in the world. Alexis was in the first round of Y Combinator startups, funded in a model that has quickly become replicated worldwide as the standard means of investing in early stage web startups. He'll share what he learned from having gone through the experience, as well as what it's like now working for Y Combinator as their "Ambassador to the East." With over 60 companies in his portfolio today, Alexis will also share his insights as an investor and show companies of all sizes the most valuable lessons they can learn from startup culture.

  • 10:45 AM—11:15 AM
Alexis Ohanian Meet & Greet and Networking Break
  • Keynote #2:

    Building An Invested Audience

Learn how to grow a community around your content and involve audiences in the content creation process. Note to Self podcast host Manoush Zomorodi demonstrates how she’s experimented with interactive storytelling, crowdsourcing, and data collection to build a loyal, involved, and enthusiastic audience. Her engagement projects take listeners on introspective journeys that provide value to the community as a whole while providing broader research into how technology is impacting humanity. Get ready to spark your own creative thinking about how consumers can be a key part of any campaign.

Speaker: Manoush Zomorodi, Host and managing editor of WNYC’s Podcast Note to Self

  • 12:00 PM—1:30 PM
  • Publisher Showcase will highlight five thriving publishers within the Rakuten Affiliate Network.

Featured Publishers: DealMoon, Fount, IZEA, Project September, SNAPPY

Each publisher will take the stage for 10 minutes to present on what they do, the opportunities within their platform, and how they can partner with advertisers. This strategy session is a tremendous opportunity for advertisers looking to explore new relationships or expand on existing relationships. For Publishers it is a chance to learn more about what is happening with the space.

To ask questions to the publishers please tweet with #rmshowcase #rmevents between now and the session!

  • Strategy Session: The Evolution of Product Discovery: Lessons in Social Advertising

Only a couple of years ago, marketers questioned the efficacy of Facebook advertising because of the “lack of purchase intent.”  But it is that very supposed weakness that is social’s greatest strength – users on social channels are open to discovering new products, making it an ideal place to begin the purchase journey. However, retailers with thousands of products in their catalogs are hard pressed to determine which products will resonate with which of the 1.4 billion people on Facebook.

This session will explore how advertisers can leverage product discovery and the resulting insights across multi-channel marketing strategies.
